A portrait box, or folio box as it is sometimes called, is a keepsake box holding your precious memories. It is a treasure chest of art prints from your photography experience that you will hold onto for the rest of your life.
The one shown here is a luscious metallic gold leatherette box housing 11×14 inch white mats. Each mat holds a 7×10 inch print on fine art paper, guaranteed to last over 100 years without fading.
When you have a photography experience with me, whether it is for a portrait of yourself, your family or your newborn baby, you will get the option to purchase one of these wonderful items.

What do we have here? Another review for a Saal Digital product! Despite what you may be thinking, I’m not sponsored by Saal Digital in any way. I just happened to see their advert on social media for a voucher for one of their wall products so I applied for it.
I have a set of small samples which I picked up at the SWPP trade show in January this year and I particularly liked the acrylic gallery print so I chose to get a larger one with my own photo with the voucher. I went for a 45 cm x 30 cm size.
What immediately struck me when I unwrapped the packaging was the lovely glossy sheen of the acrylic on top of the print. It is like highly polished glass but lighter and more resistant to shattering.
The print itself is of a very high quality. It is sandwiched between the acrylic glass and an Alu-Dibond panel which according to the website is the new trend for wall decors. I can see why because it looks and feels very high quality and robust.
There are several mounting options when ordering the product. I chose an aluminium subframe. It is basically a rectangular frame that is attached to the back of the Alu-Dibond panel with a hollow space to hang on a screw in the wall.
Overall, I am very happy. I can’t find any flaws in this product. As with the photo book that I reviewed earlier, the ordering process was easy and the delivery was quick. I received it in less than a week.
Now comes the hard bit – deciding on where to hang it!
I recently went to Rome for a family holiday. We all had such a wonderful time and I decided I wanted to make a nice photo album to preserve those memories. I chose to try out Saal-Digital because I have seen their products at photography shows and was impressed with the quality and are very well priced. I also had a £40 voucher to use with them in return for a review. I decided to pay another £30 on top to add more pages because I had a ton of photos from my holiday to print. I’m not affiliated with them in any way and am free to say negative things if I want, although there isn’t much negative to say to be honest.
The first thing I noticed when I picked it up was the beautiful soft touch material of the cover. It’s quite hard to describe in words but it is kind of rubbery. It is very solid too. I chose to have a photo which wraps round from the front to the back.
Upon opening the book, I am presented with very sharp images on lustre photo paper that is thicker than the norm. I haven’t measured the thickness but the website says 0.34mm. It’s not glossy but does reflect some light. The pages do bend so aren’t fully rigid but this is still really good for a photo album. There is an option to choose thicker pages for an extra cost.
Colour reproduction is very good and accurate. Blue skies are presented as expected while not being over saturated.
Black and white photos look gorgeous. So much detail in there.
Negatives? I did notice on a few of the pages that there is a grid-like pattern in the ink.
A bit strange because most of the other pages are fine. It’s not too much of a problem though.
The spreads have a layflat binding so you can have a photo spread across the middle without it looking broken. Great for panoramas.
It took just a day or two to be despatched from ordering and I received it in less than a week from order. It was well packaged so there was no damage done during transit.
Overall I am very impressed and so is everybody else who has seen it. My mum was really enthusiastic about it and took it to show her sister when she visited. My brother now wants one for his photos that he took on the same holiday! And I will definitely be using Saal-Digital again for my personal photos.
I’m making more of an effort to get in front of the camera more and speak to you as a person rather than a bunch of text. I’m starting by talking about some of the products that I provide for my photography clients. This first one is about the gallery multi-picture wall frame. It really is a beauty, as you can see in the video.
If you read one of my earlier blog posts, I was raving about a portrait box that I saw at The Photography Show. Well I finally have my own Crystal Masterpiece portrait box as a sample to show prospective clients. It is absolutely beautiful!
The one that was on display at The Photography Show had a wooden-looking material which was really striking but I chose a glittery white one for my sample. It really looks elegant.
Each mat has the same material as the box and the photo is placed behind an acrylic pane, giving it prestigious sheen unlike anything I have seen in a product like this.
Anyway, enjoy the pictures!
